The Republic of Kenya occupies an area of 582,644 square kilometers(225,000 square miles). Lying astride the Equator, Kenya extends approximately
41/2" North and 41/2" South of the Equator. The country is bisected lengthwise by the Great Rift Valley that runs from Jordan in the North to Mozambique in the South. Kenya shares common borders with five other nations namely:- Tanzania in the South, Uganda in the West, Sudan in the North West, Ethiopia in the North and Somalia in the East.
The Indian Ocean coastline which forms the Eastern border stretches some four hundred and eighty kilometers from the Somali border to the Tanzania border.-Within her boundaries, are every known landform, ranging from the true glacial ice to arid desert, mountain massifs to rich savannahs as well as numerous lakes and dense forests. year.Kenya boasts such big rivers as the Tana, and Athi which drain into the Indian Ocean. River Tana delta is an important bio-diversity conservation area. Kenya owns a part of Lake
- Victoria, one of the largest fresh water lakes in the world which is also the source of River Nile, the longest river in the world, that drains intoithe Mediterranean Sea. Due to Kenya's location astride the Equator and the fact that Kenya is served by nearly all major international airlines, Kenya is truly the gateway to Africa. It is, therefore, not surprising that Kenya has had an enviable long tradition of playing host to thousands of visitors from abroad.
The variation in altitude and terrain creates contrasts in climate. The coast is hot and often humid. Mornings in the central Highlands can be cool while in the
North and North East, the days are dry and very hot. In the areas most frequented by visitors on safari, the weather is ideal as it is neither too hot nor too cool. Due to Kenya's
location on the Equator, there are almost equal nights and days all year round. The sun rises between 5.45-6.15 a.m. and sets at 6.30-7.00 p.m.There are two rainy seasons which interrupts Kenya's otherwise unbroken sunny weather. The short rains occur from late October through November and the long rains from late March through to early June. Rain usually falls in the late afternoon. Dry periods occur during the rainy seasons and sunny spells are often experienced even on rainy days. July and August are the coolest months and the days are often overcast especially in the mornings. The rains do not interfere with safaris since very few tourist roads become impassable. The Parks are fresh and green with fewer people arid vehicles. Accommodation is plentiful and cheaper during the low season that coincides with the long rains. |
